How to Repair a Water Softener
How to Repair a Water Softener
There are a lot of cases where you water softener may not work and might need repairs. The best way to perform a water softeners repair is by knowing what exactly has caused the problem. Below are mentioned scenarios where a water softener might stop working and ways to deal with them.
No regeneration or inadequate regeneration cycle.
The cause of this problem can be a cut-off of power, a defective timer or an error to be caused on the clock or the timer due to a power failure. To fix these problems start by checking that the softener is properly plugged in, make sure that the power circuit board is turned on and the switch, breaker, pull chain are all working and are in good condition. If the timer is not working the softener will not cycle, in that case, you would have to replace the timer entirely. If there has been an electrical power failure, you would have to reset the time and date of the device. There might be a clog, or there may be something wrong with the tank float assembly. The line flow might have a clog in the drain. There may be a clog in the injector screen or the injector itself, or there might be an internal leak.
No Soft Water
This may be a result of no salt in the tank, the softener may be in the “bypass” mode, there might be an insufficient flow of water into the brine tank, or there may be a plugged injector screen.
You can fix this by switching the softener from bypass to open mode using the switch that is on the device. See the brine tank and check its salt level. If there is a deficiency of salt, add more salt to bring it to a balanced level. Look if there is a salt bridge formed on the upper brine tank. This may prevent the salt from falling into the bottom so that it can saturate the water with itself. If there is a crust, break it. Add salt if it is needed. Normally the salt level is kept above the level of water in the brine tank. The water should reach a level of 6-8” during the regeneration cycle in the brine tank.
Take the injector or the filter screen and clean it thoroughly. Insufficient water content or insufficient salt in the tank can make the softener to work with less efficiency or work not at all.
Observation of Hard water after a regen cycle
This kind of condition can occur the bypass valve is not turned to closed, the water might not be going inside, and through the water softener, the water levels may be too high or too low in the brine tank, the injector might be damaged, or the assembly may have gotten a damage, The O-rings of the Bypass valve may be leaking, or the O-ring of the distributor tube may be damaged.
To fix these problems, you would have to shut down the bypass valve. There may be a damaged nozzle, or the leaks may have caused the injection assembly to carry out poor suction.
If there is a leak at the bypass valve, it might cause an appearance of hard water after a regen cycle. This can happen when it leaks in the water through the building. Check the salt dose and compare it to the water that is originally incoming to see if your settings are correct when you are attaching the new O-rings.
Excessive Use of Salt
A lot of factors can cause an excessive use of salt. There are a lot of things that you have to keep in mind. For example, you have to give the tank a proper dose of salt, when you give an improper dose of salt to the tank it may cause excessive use of salt, another thing that might be a reason of this may be an improper level of water. You should always keep the level of water in the brine in check. If the water level is too high there will be an excessive use of salt, if the water level is low, there will be more use of salt.
To fix this, you would have to check the settings of the salt dose. You may have to check the settings and controls of the regeneration cycle at the softener control. You might have to look for a brine tank float that might be stuck; there may be a clogged flow control or a clogged drain line. Damage in the timer or a plugged injector may also be a cause of this abnormality.
A loss of the pressure of Water
There may be a pressure loss because of an accumulation of iron or any other sediment buildup in the water piping, the buildup of iron inside the water conditioner, loss of the water softener resin; there might be a clog in the water inlet because of accumulation debris in the supply of the water. It can be caused by any recent plumbing work. There are a lot of things that we have to take care of so we should be careful in each step we take. Because every time we try to set one thing right, there may be another we are about to mess up.
You can carry out the water softeners repair by cleaning the pipe elbow or the clogged piping. Installing the right kind of water filter may help because they are going to keep the water clean and there will be fewer chances of clogging.
Keep the control head of the water softener cleaned up. Use a mineral cleaner to keep the water bed cleaned from the buildup of unwanted minerals. It will also make the water softener more efficient. It will make its efficiency rise. There will be a lot less clogging. Mineral cleaners are a great thing to keep you water softeners keep going.
